SA8000 Standard Overview

The Social Accountability 8000 International Standard (SA8000) is a management system based on the International Labour Organization (ILO) Charter, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It focuses on protecting labor conditions, environmental standards, and workers' rights. Established in 1997 by Social Accountability International (SAI), a U.S.-based organization, SA8000 became the world's first international ethical standard. Its primary mission is to ensure suppliers meet social responsibility requirements. Applicable to all industries and company sizes globally, SA8000 follows a structure similar to ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management), enabling third-party certification.

The SA8000 certification focuses on nine core areas: child labor, forced labor, health and safety, freedom of association and collective bargaining rights, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, wages, and management systems.
